		<description>*Creative criticism* - or just good criticism? Whatever you want to call it, it&#039;s badly needed, so bravo. To paraphrase Edward W. Said in Humanism and Democratic Criticism, over-emphasizing theory leads some folks to shut down the intellectual curiosity that is supposed to be the basis of scholarship. But Said also notes that a total lack of interest in literary theories can become a form of easy shelter from thought. Surely one goal of reading and writing about reading is to become more human. J.
